Life is but a vapour

James 4:14 says: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

We've all sat and watched steam rise off of a cooking pot on the stove. The vapour will rise in the air and just as quickly as it rises, it disappears into thin air. It's almost like magic; now you see it, now you don't.

Here lately there have been so many friends, relatives, and church members that have been dealing with major life threatening problems. Cancer, infections, pneumonia, all things that have came on quickly. One of my first cousins was just recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. One day she was sitting in a restaurant eating and having a good time, the next she is in the doctor's office being told she has a very serious cancer in her body.

There's not a one of us that is guaranteed our next breath. The Lord holds life in the palm of his hand. Our life is just as James writes, "even a vapour." Being a pastor I experience first hand the pain and suffering of people. Nearly all are caught off guard, unaware. If we only knew what tomorrow holds, perhaps we would do things different. Perhaps we would work less and play more, or tell that someone special that you love them more often.

Friends, the sad reality is that we don't know what is going to happen tomorrow. But one thing we can know for sure is where we stand with God. I for one want to be standing by His side, holding His hand when life's storms try to blow me down. The Bible assures us that if we put our faith and trust in Him, we will be standing on a firm foundation. He also promises us that He will never leave us nor forsake us.While this life may be nothing more than a vapour, our life beyond this earth will be an eternity. Are you ready when that times comes?

I preached a message entitled "Life Is But A Vapour" you can watch it here: http://youtu.be/QS3lIBNOEZs or below:
